Our story
Matjaž’s Homestead is the result of the dedicated work of the Pavlin family, who are primarily committed to preserving the cultural heritage of the Slovenian countryside while also inspiring our guests with the remarkable cultural and natural richness of our beautiful country.
The story began in 1998, when we decided to purchase the neighboring (Bučar) house, which had been left empty after the death of its last owner. As the house was in very poor condition, our initial plan was to demolish it and plant an orchard. However, realizing that such traditional houses had become a rarity, we eventually decided to renovate it. During the renovation, we followed the guidance of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. At the same time, we saved a hayrack from Mirtkova farm in Mačkovec from destruction and reassembled it on the opposite side of the road. Along the way, we also had the opportunity to purchase a 200-year-old wooden barn, originally from Planina near Sevnica, which we relocated and placed behind the house. These were the foundations for the creation of a unique tourist offering.
Green Key is the leading standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within tourism. At Matjaževa Domačija, we are proud to have held this prestigious eco-label for many years.
